Hernia Support Belt for Ostomates UK: Complete Guide to Parastomal Hernias

Parastomal hernia is one of the most common complications after stoma surgery, affecting between 30% and 50% of ostomates in the UK. A well-chosen support belt can make a significant difference — both in preventing hernias from developing and in managing them once present.

What is a Parastomal Hernia?

A parastomal hernia occurs when part of the intestine pushes through the weakened muscle wall surrounding the stoma. It appears as a bulge around the stoma, typically more visible when standing, coughing or straining.

Most are symptom-free initially, but can develop into: difficulty achieving a secure bag seal, discomfort during physical activity, a feeling of pressure in the abdomen, and in severe cases, bowel obstruction — seek urgent NHS emergency care if suspected.

Risk Factors

  • Obesity: increased intra-abdominal pressure
  • Older age: reduced muscle tone
  • Intense physical activity without adequate support post-surgery
  • Chronic cough (bronchitis, COPD, smoking)
  • Chronic constipation causing repeated straining

How a Support Belt Helps

A stoma support belt provides compression and support to the abdominal wall. Key benefits: prevention by reducing intra-abdominal pressure, containment for existing hernias, better bag adhesion, and improved confidence for daily life and sport.

Types of Support Belts

Standard Stoma Belt: Elastic, breathable fabric. General pouch support and moderate compression. Ideal for everyday use, sport and hernia prevention. Some available via NHS appliance contractors.

Hernia Support Belt (Firm Panel): Firm support panel for stronger containment. Recommended by NHS stoma nurses for diagnosed hernias.

NHS Support for Parastomal Hernia

Your NHS stoma nurse is the first point of contact. They can assess the hernia, recommend appropriate support garments (some on NHS prescription), adapt your appliance for the changed contour, and refer you to a colorectal surgeon if needed. Note: not all hernias require surgical repair — many are managed conservatively with support garments.

When to Start Using a Support Belt

As soon as your surgeon or stoma nurse approves — typically 4-8 weeks post-surgery. Early use is key for prevention.

Choosing the Right Belt

  • Compress without restricting breathing or leaving pressure marks
  • Stoma aperture for easy, pressure-free bag access
  • Breathable materials for continuous wear
  • Compatible with your one or two-piece system

Our stoma belts are designed with all these requirements — trusted by UK ostomates, made in Europe.

Safe Exercise with a Parastomal Hernia

Exercise is not contraindicated but should be adapted. Recommended activities with support: walking, swimming, low-impact yoga and Pilates, cycling. Approach with caution: heavy weightlifting and exercises significantly increasing intra-abdominal pressure.

When to Seek Medical Attention

  • A new or growing bulge around your stoma
  • Sudden or severe pain around the stoma
  • The stoma changes colour (particularly darkening)
  • Nausea, vomiting or no stoma output — contact NHS 111 or go to A&E
