How to Protect Your Ostomy Bag During Showers | Expert Waterproofing Tips UK
You can usually shower with your stoma pouch on, or without it when you change the system. After an operation, first check when your surgical team says you can shower and how to look after any wounds or dressings. Your pouch instructions matter too, especially if it has a filter. You do not need a complicated waterproofing routine just because you have a stoma.
Before you turn on the water

If you plan a pouch change, prepare the new system before removing the old one. Give yourself time, especially while you are still learning. On a tired day, choose the simplest routine that follows your team's advice.
The UOAA bathing guidance explains that ordinary contact with water does not harm the stoma. Whether you keep the pouch on is a practical choice; taking it off is not necessary to let the skin 'breathe'.

Showering with the pouch on
- If your pouch is drainable, empty it and make sure its outlet is closed.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for water exposure. Cover a filter only if your particular system requires it, using the recommended cover.
- Shower gently, then pat the pouch backing and adhesive border dry with a soft towel.
- Check that the system still feels secure before getting dressed.
A damp fabric backing does not automatically mean the seal has failed. You do not need to replace a well-functioning system after every shower. Check your usual change schedule and the instructions for your appliance.
If you prefer to remove the system
Choose a time that works with your own output pattern. Stool or urine may still come out while you shower, so keep clean supplies handy. Warm water is generally enough to clean the skin around the stoma. If you use a cleanser, avoid oily or perfumed products and rinse away any residue before applying the new barrier.
Dry the skin fully and follow the fitting instructions for your system. There is no single five-minute waiting rule for every pouch. Nor is there a universal hairdryer setting or number of seconds that everyone should follow. A gentle towel routine keeps this step straightforward.
When a leak needs a change
If output is leaking beneath the barrier, or you feel burning or itching there, change the system and check the skin. Do not tape over an active leak. The WOCN skin-care guide recommends checking the fit around the stoma and the adhesive side of the removed barrier. Repeated leakage or sore skin is a reason to contact your stoma nurse.
After the shower: get comfortable
Once you are dry and your pouch is fitted, choose clothes that leave room for it to fill. A wrap or belt can be an optional way to cover the pouch under clothing. It is not a waterproof seal or a treatment for leakage. Choose it for how it feels and looks, and follow the garment's care instructions.

Do I have to use waterproof tape?
Not routinely. Use only the filter cover or extra adhesive products advised for your pouching system. Tape should not be used to patch a leak underneath the barrier.
Can I shower without my pouch?
Usually, once your team has cleared showering. Keep supplies ready because the stoma can still produce output. Your wound dressings may have different instructions.
How long should the skin dry before a new barrier?
It needs to be fully dry. Follow your appliance instructions rather than a fixed countdown; do not apply the new barrier over wet skin.
