Children and Ostomy

In general, the care and considerations for ostomized children and adolescents are the same as those indicated for adults.

In most cases, ostomies in pediatric age are usually of a temporary nature, although there are cases in which it becomes a permanent process.

The choice of device will depend on the location of the stoma and the type of intervention. There are smaller devices for children, specially adapted for them. Between the ages of 12 and 18 they can make the switch to adult devices.

It is important to take into account the growth and development of this age group and it is necessary to measure the size or diameter of the stoma more frequently.

Children and adolescents with ostomies can dehydrate more easily, so it is necessary to make sure they drink the necessary liquids to avoid dehydration.

They can perform any type of physical activity, but as in the case of adults, special care should be taken to avoid any type of impact with the stoma.

Ostomized children will be able to resume their classes once they have recovered. It is important to communicate the new situation to their educators, giving the necessary indications about the care of the stoma, so that they can provide support if necessary.

It is advisable to go to the education center with several extra ostomy bags and spare material.
